Research at the Department of Neurology focusses on neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation, muscle diseases and brain tumors. We are convinced that only a thorough understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms leading to neurological diseases will pave the way for developing new therapeutic approaches and improving available therapies. We therefore combine basic scientific research in cellular systems and animal models with clinical. In all research areas, basic and clinical research is complemented by a clinical service at the highest level. The neurodegeneration research groups are studying the cellular mechanisms leading to Alzheimer´s disease ( Prof. Walter , Prof. Heneka ) and hereditary ataxias (Prof. Wüllner , PD Dr. Evert ). We have a particular interest in inflammation and vascular pathology associated with neurodegeneration ( Prof. Heneka , PD Dr. Müller , Prof. Petzold ). Clinical research in patients with neurodegenerative disorders is done in close collaboration with the DZNE . The neurooncology groups studies basic mechanisms of the pathogenesis of brain tumors and conducts clinical trials in patients with gliomas (e.g. glioblastomas), brain metastases and primary cerebral lymphomas ( Prof. Herrlinger , PD Dr. Glas ). The muscle research group is interested in mitochondrial diseases and in mechanisms of muscle regeneration ( Prof. Dr. Kornblum, Dr. Reimann ).
