Sleep and sleep disorders
in neurosurgical and neuro critical care patients
PI: Dr. med. Sebastian Zaremba
Our group investigates potential risk modifying effects of sleep disorders on patients with severe neurological and neurosurgical disorders. In addition, we aim to further elucidate the pharmaco-physiological interaction effects of intensive care unit treatment on sleep.
The current focus of our work is the effect of sleep apnea in patients with severe neurovascular injury (e.g. intracranial aneurysm and other vascular malformations) and the potential negative effect of sleep apnea on clinical outcome in these patients. We furthermore investigate the effects of opioids and anesthetics on upper airway patency and the severity of sleep apnea.
Additional research of our group investigates the bidirectional interaction of sleep and headache disorders.
Our current research focusses on the risk modifying effect of sleep disorders in patients with intracranial aneurysm and subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms in critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients.
