Neurovascular Diseases

Changes in cerebral blood flow are centrally involved in the pathogenesis of neurological diseases such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. However, the mechanisms underlying these changes remain incompletely understood. In addition, different classes of glial cells in the brain, such as astrocytes, undergo reactive inflammatory changes in these diseases, but the contribution of these pathways for neurodegeneration or neuroprotection have largely remained undefined.

We aim to identify the cellular signaling pathways responsible for blood flow regulation and reactive changes in glial cells, and their contribution to disease intitiation and progression. We investigate these questions in models of Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and stroke, using techniques such as in vivo two-photon microscopy, ultra-high field MRI, electropyhsiology, genetic and pharmacological calcium indicators, and behavioral tests.

In addition, we seek to translate our experimental findings into clinical studies. To this end, we are involved in the conception and execution of clinical multicenter studies investigating therapeutic strategies in stroke, as well as the mechanisms of vascular cognitive impairment.
